Cafedirect in The Times

Cafédirect plans to bring its brand of fair trade to wider audience at home and abroad

Anne MacCaig is tougher than she looks, which is just as well because she is about to try to overturn centuries of colonial behaviour. “The white man has done a very good job, particularly in Africa, of making sure coffee is a white man’s drink and it is not to be drunk by people there,” she says.

The chief executive of Cafédirect, the UK’s largest fair trade hot beverage company, wants to change that by helping growers to develop local markets for their products. It is one of a number of initiatives Ms MacCaig plans to use to combat falling retail sales.

…The Fairtrade Foundation reported that global sales of fair trade products increased by 22 per cent in 2008 and were worth €2.9billion (£2.5 billion). Global sales of fair trade tea increased by 112 per cent and cotton by 94 per cent, although bananas and coffee still remain the most popular products.
