On 12 May, the Co-op became the first Scotland-wide retailer to stock Malawi’s Kilombero rice. Kilombero rice will now be available in 79 Co-op stores across Scotland. The product had previously been available through Fair Trade shops, church groups and schools.
The Malawian High Commissioner, Kena Mphonda, visited the Co-op’s new Broomhill store in Glasgow to celebrate the launch. The High Commissioner was welcomed by John McNeill, the Co-op’s Managing Director for the North. Scottish Fair Trade Forum’s Development Manager Jim Lee was also present at the event.
Kilombero rice is ethically sourced by Paisley-based Just Trading Scotland (JTS). JTS, supported by the Scottish Government and with funding from Social Investment Scotland, has been working with smallholder farmers in Malawi since 2009.
