1) What’s your role at the Forum?
I'm a Campaigns and Communications volunteer. I joined the Forum in January at the heart of the preparations for the Fair Trade Fortnight. It was an exciting time to join the Forum, as there was a lot going on and a lot to familiarise myself with.
2) How did you get interested in Fair Trade?
I always had personal interest in global issues that affect developing countries. Whilst trade liberalisation has been a good force in reducing much of the poverty in many developing countries, there is also a strong link between ‘free' and 'unfair' trade and increasing poverty. International trade policies are ignorant of the negative effects these policies have on hard working producers and local communities in developing countries. As a firm believer in social justice, Fair Trade is the only answer in combating these trade injustices. My interest in Fair Trade was shaped as a result.
3) What has been your highlight since you joined the Forum?
This is a difficult one! I cannot single out any specific event or activity as there are a lot of organisations and committed campaigners doing great work across the country. They all have to be credited for their excellent work! However, I believe Pamela L'Intelligent’s personal account of her life had a profound impact on many communities she shared her story with. This also enabled a better understanding of the positive impact Fair Trade can make.
4) Any interesting projects coming up?
The post 2015 development agenda focuses on sustainability. Producers in developing countries depend on the Fair Trade social premium to invest in the education of their children and their communities. I would like to see how international trade negotiations and policies will be shaped to the realisation of these goals.
5) What’s your favourite Fair Trade product?
Any product with the Fair Trade mark! Because I know behind each Fair Trade label, there is a positive story. I would like to dine in a Fair Trade restaurant, and I might get my hands on a Fair Trade mobile phone.
