1) What’s your role at the Forum?
I'm the Community Engagement Officer - I work to support Fairtrade Towns groups and new groups starting up as well as trying to form strategic partnerships that will expand our reach. I also work with universities and colleges around Scotland. I did the communications and social media (before Simone was here!) and I plan and organise our events like the Fair Trade Awards. I also run a producer tour in Fairtrade Fortnight - it's a very varied role!
2) What have you been working on recently?
Most of my time is spent organising our Scottish Fair Trade Campaigner Conference which is fast approaching! I'm also working with Girl Guiding Scotland on a Fair Trade badge and with Youth Scotland on a toolkit for their youth groups, as well as ongoing support and contact with universities, colleges and Towns groups. I'm also doing some social media training for a Fairtrade Town group this week.
3) How did you get interested in Fair Trade?
I always used to go to the One World Shop with my parents when I was a child and so I was always aware of Fair Trade. As I got older I became more interested in social justice and trade justice in general and particularly in how it relates to women's rights and climate change. It's just the right thing to do. I've learnt a lot since joining the Forum too - particularly about the history of the movement and am always interested in what campaigners have to say - some of them have been campaigning for Fair Trade for over 25 years and have truly made a difference in the world.
4) What has been your highlight since you joined the Forum?
Going to Orkney in Fairtrade Fortnight with Basilio, our visiting producer. I'd never been before and the islands are breathtakingly beautiful, but also we just got such a warm welcome and were so impressed with the work of the Fairtrade Zone group. We didn't want to leave.
I also love every time I go out and meet Fair Trade campaigners in Towns groups around the country - they inspire me in so many ways.
5) What’s your favourite Fair Trade product?
I'm currently using a shea butter sugar body scrub which is amazing. I also eat about ten bananas a week so definitely Fair Trade bananas too!
