World Fair Trade Day, 14 May 2016

World Fair Trade Day is an initiative of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) that takes place on the second Saturday of May each year. It is an inclusive worldwide festival of events celebrating Fair Trade as a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty and exploitation, climate change and the economic crisis that has the greatest impact on the world’s most vulnerable populations.

From 2015 to 2017, the theme set by the WFTO for this day is: Be an Agent for Change.

Fair Trade is an agent for change. It is a tangible solution to poverty eradication, a tool for sustainable development and above all, a way of promoting social justice.

You can also be, and encourage others to be Agents for Change, on 14 May:

Create a human chain! The WFTO encourages you to celebrate the day by forming human chains with other supporters of Fair Trade. The human chain formation is a way of showing solidarity with people, groups and institutions that are making positive change and continue to make a difference in the lives of community and the planet.

Be an Agent for Change on social media. Like, share, Tweet and tell everyone about World Fair Trade Day and Fair Trade in general.  Add the Agent for Change badge to your social media profile and cover photos.  Check out the WFTO’s guide to using social media to celebrate World Fair Trade Day here.

Organise a lesson or activity with your school or group around the theme of Agent For Change. This could involve wearing light blue (the WFTO colour) or educating your group about the importance of individual activism and volunteering. The WFTO website has more ideas for activities here.

Note about the WFTO

The World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) is a global network of organisations representing the Fair Trade supply chain. Its members include associations, cooperatives, exporters, importers, networks and support organisations that “demonstrate 100% commitment to Fair Trade and apply the 10 WFTO Principles of Fair Trade to their supply chain.”

The WFTO operates in over 70 countries across 5 regions (Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America and the Pacific Rim) with elected global and regional boards.

Products carrying the WFTO Label are made and traded by Guaranteed Fair Trade Organisations dedicated to the sustainable Fair Trade economy. Every purchase of products with the WFTO Label supports small producers and their communities.
