Become a Fairtrade School

All you need to know about becoming a Fairtrade School can be found in the Fairtrade Schools Action Guide. Click here to download it for free from the Fairtrade Foundation website.

To start working towards becoming a Fairtrade School first of all you need a teacher to register your interest. Click here to go to the Fairtrade Foundation to register. The Scottish Fair Trade Forum has put together a very useful template with examples to help you step by step to collect your evidence and to apply for Fairtrade status. Click here to download the template.

Then start working on meeting the following 5 goals:

1. Set up a Fairtrade Steering Group with at least half the members being pupils, which meets up at least once a term.

2. Write and adopt a Fairtrade policy which has the support of the Parent Council (Board of Governors) and is signed by the Head Teacher.

3. Use and sell Fair Trade products as much as possible.

4. Learn about Fair Trade in a minimum of three subjects in two year groups.

5. Take action for Fair Trade at least once a term in the school and once a year in the community.

You need evidence to prove your school has achieved these 5 goals.  Keep electronic copies of all your documents so that you can apply online.

Start uploading your evidence whenever you like. It will take you at least a year to reach all five goals. When you are ready, submit your evidence.
