Achieved Fairtrade Status: July 2011
Come Dine With Us
Parents and staff enjoyed a pop up dining experience once again, when the Fairtrade group at Waid Academy turned South Waid into a pop up restaurant for the night. Organising, cooking and serving the food themselves, the S1 – S6 pupils who make up the Fairtrade group hosted a sell-out event raising over £300 for charity. The dinner showcased not only the wide range of local and Fairtrade food and drink available but the hospitality skills of the pupils. Guests enjoyed a choice from a delicious 3 course menu which included dishes such as 5 Spice Pork Casserole made with Fairtrade honey, spices and red wine served with spiced roasted root vegetables, Vegetable Curry using Fairtrade spices and rice and a rocky road cheesecake made with Fairtrade biscuit base, 3 kinds of chocolate and vanilla. Other ingredients were locally sourced and organic where possible.
Returning guest complimented the pupils and commented that the food surpassed even the previous year’s event. With three successful pop up restaurant experiences under their belt staff have been warned to get their sombreros ready as the team plan to organise a Mexican themed Fairtrade Fiesta on 4th March to coincide with Fairtrade Fortnight. This event should brighten up an otherwise dull time of the year!
Waid Academy had their Christmas Fair. They bought 10 chickens and 5 goats from Oxfam, gave £200 to the Fairtrade Foundation and over £300 to Traidcraft as well as donating £200 of Fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar and jam to their local foodbank. They aim to raise even more money this year and use it to do something similar.
