The deadline for orders has now passed.
We are retailing reusable, washable, good quality face coverings, ethically made and supplied through a sustainable business model putting people and planet first.
Face coverings are now compulsory in Scotland in shops and on public transport. It is expected that they will be in common use for some time.
In May we placed an order with Villageworks in Cambodia for face coverings through their partner, Fair Trade Scotland Ltd. We are all members of the World Fair Trade Organization and the face coverings are produced on Fair Trade terms providing important support to marginalised workers in Cambodia.
The feedback from our customers has been positive so we are now placing a further order if we get enough expressions of interest to meet the minimum order requirement. We do business this way because a) we don’t have the funds to buy products speculatively in the hope that we can sell them and b) the world already has too many textile products that never get sold and just get dumped. We are committed to a sustainable model of business with our partners for people and planet.
This isn’t ‘fast textiles’. It is about sustainable production, using offcuts and spare material to produce items for which there are customers already committed while supporting marginalised workers. This model does mean that it can take up to six weeks from the order being placed to the product being delivered to the customer.
The face coverings available are based on the HK Mask Design which is a laboratory-tested system using fabric masks and filters. They are made in line with the World Fair Trade Organization's and Occupational Safety and Health Standards thereby ensuring safe and fair conditions for the workers. In light of coronavirus, the producer organisation has also enhanced health and hygiene in the workplace and provided personal protective equipment for the workers who make these coverings.
They are made of cotton, have two layers with a built-in pocket to add your own extra filter (e.g. a piece of tissue or kitchen roll), and come in three sizes:
"S" size : H10.50cm X W17cm Elastic string: 10cm
"M" size : H12cm X W18cm Elastic string: 14cm
"L" size : H15.50cm X W21cm Elastic string: 16cm
Coverings cost £5.00 each for orders up to 300 and £4.00 each for orders over 300. We can supply smaller numbers for individuals and families and larger numbers for groups and organisations.
The feedback from people who have bought them already has been really positive:
"Comfy to wear and do not pull on your ears."
"Beautifully made, nice colours and have withstood washes at 60 degrees."
"Many thanks for forwarding the face coverings to Ullapool. They've all been distributed and we are delighted with them. Personally I find them a very comfortable neat fit and I like the "pocket" to add a filter. And I specially like the WFTO logo!"
"They are wonderful. Thank you."
Would you or your organisation be interested in buying these coverings? If you are interested:
1. Please email us by 12 noon on Thursday 16 July with the number of masks you want to buy. Also please let us know how many you want in each size (small, medium and large).
2. If we receive enough interest, we will make an order and would require 50% payment upfront. If we do not receive enough interest, we will let you know.
